M&M’s in space

Did you know that M&M’s were the first candies in space?

These tiny morsels of chocolate and sugar made history when they were launched into orbit with the Columbia space shuttle on 21 April 1981. Although NASA made an effort to remove as much brand labelling as possible and renamed the popular candy, the recognisable lowercase ‘m’ was not changed. In many ways M&M’s are a perfect space snack. They are bite-sized and, unlike other candies or foods, do not crumble or melt in your hand. There are countless pictures of the astronauts tossing the candy-coated chocolates in zero-gravity environment in order to eat them. The candies, however, provided more than just a dose of sugar or amusement. They were a reminder of home and a connection to the astronauts’ earthly lives they had left behind.

Np.  M&M’s were a reminder of home and a connection to the astronauts’ earthly lives they had left behind. (Drażetki M&M’s były dla astronautów wspomnieniem domu oraz łącznikiem z ich ziemskim życiem, które pozostawili za sobą (tzn. przed wyprawą w kosmos).
